How is there only one week left before Halloween?! I seriously can not wrap my head around it. October is without a doubt my favorite month and the best time of year! The Fall is just so magical so I like to soak up every ounce of it. But like most things in 2020 our original Fall plans had to be altered.
For obvious reasons we will not be having a Halloween party this year, one of my favorite traditions 🙁 , but I am still determined to have a good time 🙂
That brings me to this post, what better activity is there in 2020 than to binge watch Netflix! It’s safe, comforting, and gives us the opportunity to forget life’s stresses for a bit. So I’ve compiled a list of the best Halloween shows and movies to finish out October with.
Hubie Halloween
Not a classic (yet) but still an incredibly good time. Hubie Halloween premiered this year on Netflix and I was so excited for it. The movie ended up being a bit different than I had originally anticipated but in a good way. For one, it had a lot more heart than I thought. Hubie (Adam Sandler) is just an all around good guy who is looking to keep his community of Salem, Massachusetts safe and fun for everyone on Halloween night. But town residents start to go missing one by one and it is up to Hubie to solve the case before it is too late. I loved this movie because it is saturated in Halloween! The sound track is a Halloween Party best of playlist and every inch of the town is decorated to perfection. But most of all it is impossible to not fall in love with the character of Hubie. No matter how many times he is struck down he always gets back up and is ready to lend a helping hand. A must watch for the whole family!
The Addams Family
This one is a classic as far as I am concerned lol. As a kid of the 90’s how could I not love this movie? As I am sure many other 90’s kids can attest to, this movie was my first introduction to the Addam’s Family. As I got older I was able to appreciate the mastery of Charles Addams the man. His characters are timeless and truly unique. Living just a stones throw away from where Charles Addams grew up and where he drew his inspiration for his creations lends itself to my admiration as well. This movie just has all the creepy vibes but still lots of laughs and is spooky and all together ooky for all.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
For those who enjoyed the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, here is your next series. The story centers around a governess who has taken a job watching over two young children in the countryside of London. When strange oddities start to appear around the manor house, the governess has to decipher real threats from imagined ones.
Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is one of those classic tales that you hear as a kid and never forget. This Tim Burton version is one I saw as a child and never forgot. Christina Ricci and Johhny Depp are a perfect pairing as Katrina and Ichabod Crane. Burton takes this classic tale and expands it in a truly unique way. You get to see the man behind the headless horseman and the dreary foggy town of Sleepy Hollow is the perfect backdrop for this spooky tale.
Paranorman
Paranorman is the story of young boy who has the unique ability to see the dead. Norman’s everyday activities are usually altered by seeing the spirits of his loved ones, or strangers, that have passed on. After receiving a warning from his deceased Uncle about a centuries old witch curse, it is up to him to stop the prophecy from coming true. This is a sweet story of a unique boy that all can enjoy.
Scream (The Series)
If you were a fan of the Scream movie franchise then you will most likely enjoy this series. It is comprised of three seasons, seasons 1 and 2 being the same story. Season 3 is its own stand alone story. Ghostface’s story is expanded upon in this series. This is a perfect binge series for a spooky fright.
Room on the Broom
Quick and sweet, this short movie is a great introduction to witches for children this halloween season. Based on the book of the same name, this story follows a witch on a broom ride through the night sky and introduces us to the friends she makes along the way. It’s a great story of kindness and generosity. Even though I am not a child, I still love watching it every year.
Hush
This one is only for the adults in the family. Hush is the story of a deaf writer who lives alone in a house in the woods. Seeking solitude, she has isolated herself from family and friends. While under a book deadline and struggling with writers block, a masked stranger finds his way to her house. He soon breaks in and terrorizes her. She has to use all of her wits in order to outsmart this killer all while being unable to hear his next move. I loved this new and interesting take on a horror film.
Scooby Doo on Zombie Island
I’m finishing out the list with a childhood favorite of mine. Scooby Doo on Zombie Island shows us the gang several years after they disbanded. They decided to relive the past and help Daphne, now a reporter, try to find a true haunted house. Out of luck, they find their way to New Orleans and visit Moon Scar Island on a whim. It is there that they find more than they were looking for and they might just find a real ghost after all.
